History Major and Minor

History Major

History majors are required to earn a total of 30 credit hours in history courses, in addition
to the culture and civilation sequence in the core curriculum. Major requirements include:

  • WCIV 102 and 201

  • AMER 202

  • HIST 202, 350, 480 and 498

  • 3 credits of European (HIST 246-249)

  • 6 credits of North American (HIST 290-294)

  • Six electives (at least two electives at the 300-level and one at the 400-level)

The department requires history majors to have an internship experience to be arranged in consultation with an advisor.

History Minor

Any student may minor in history by taking nine credit hours of history courses, in addition to the core curriculum requirements. At least three of the nine hours must be taken in residence and six hours taken with professors in the history department.

State Certification in Teaching Social Studies

The department's teacher education program consists of the social study/education major. The program prepares students wishing to teach at the secondary level, grades 7-12. The certificates awarded to those who successfully complete the program are valid in all NASDTEC member states. See the secondary education program for further information.
