Business Major and Minors

The business curriculum affords a student the opportunity to broaden his or her understanding of the environment of modern business and of the principles and processes for effective management of organizations.

Business Major

A bachelor of science degree in Business requires 48 credits. Majors must take the following courses:

  • BUS 250, 301, 311, 313, 320, 344, 360, 400, and 404

  • BUSLP 307

  • ACCT 101 and 102

  • ECON 101, 102, and 360

Majors must also take one business cases class listed below or an elective from another department with advisor's approval. (BUS 320: Business Statistics satisfies a core curriculum requirement as it can be one of the two courses students must take in the Natural World Domain.)

Optional Concentrations
Requirements for a Concentration: a minimum of three courses in the concentration; an overall minimum GPA of 3.0 in the concentration courses; and a graded 3-credit internship. For international business concentration a semester or summer abroad may substitute for an internship.

For those who choose to pursue a concentrated field of study and who satisfy the requirements, their official college records and transcripts will show not only their major but their concentration as well. We encourage students to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their depth of knowledge and experience in one of these selected areas. Concentrations reinforce our degree in business in a way that will be professionally and personally valuable.

Double Major in Business and Information Systems

The following courses may count toward both majors: Econ 101-102, ACCT 101, BUS 307, BUS 311, BUS 360 and any course cross listed as BUS and IFSY. Learn more about the information systems double major.

General Business Minors

Minor for Accounting Major
Business minors majoring in accounting must take the following courses:

  • BUS 250

  • Four courses from the choice of: BUS 301, 311, 313, 320, 345, 360, BUSLP 307

  • 3 additional credit hours of business electives approved by the student's advisor.

Minor for Economics Majors
Business minors majoring in economics must take the following courses:

  • ACCT 101 and 102

  • BUS 250

  • Two courses from the choice of:  BUS 301, 311, 313, 320, 345, 360, BUSLP 307

  • 3 additional credit hours of business electives approved by the student's advisor.

Minor for all Other Majors
Business minors must obtain a total of 18 credit hours in Business. These credits must include:

  • ACCT 101

  • ECON 101 and 102

  • BUS 250

  • 2 courses from the choice of: BUS 301, 307, 311, 313, 320, 345, and 360.

Students planning to go on to a master's of business administration (MBA) program are advised to also take ACCT 102 since many MBA programs require a full year of accounting.

Information Systems Minor

Information Systems minors must obtain a minimum of 18 credits in Information Systems. Required minor courses include:

  • CMSCI 101 or 120

  • BUS/IFSY 311

  • IFSY 340, 355, and 395

  • 1 information systems elective course, approved by advisor

Students majoring in computer science may count CMSCI 125 as the elective for the minor.
