Update on Mount Interim President Appointment Process
Dear Members of the Mount Community,
We are looking forward to this weekend and the graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2016!
As all of you know, Mount St. Mary’s Board of Trustees put a transition team into place earlier this year to listen to and address concerns of our campus community. Following the resignation of President Simon Newman and the appointment of Acting President Karl Einolf, the Board of Trustees has crafted a process to identify and engage a long-term interim leader for our university.
In consultation with members of the transition team, the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees has engaged The Registry for College and University Presidents to assist in identifying potential candidates to serve as interim president. The Registry, started in 1992, has a list of over 500 former presidents who are willing to take up service again temporarily at institutions in need of interim leadership. In addition, at the suggestion of Archbishop Lori, the Executive Committee has retained Dr. Mary Pat Seurkamp, former president of Notre Dame of Maryland University, to advise the Executive Committee on selection.
From the pool of applicants, which will include Dr. Einolf, the Executive Committee will identify two or three finalist candidates to visit campus over the course of two days later this month. Candidates will be welcomed to campus at a reception and dinner with representatives of the Mount community. The following day, candidates will tour the campus and participate in open town hall meetings and interviews.
Our goal is to identify and engage an interim president to serve for two years, a timeframe which will provide stability for the Mount, enable progress on Mount 2.0 initiatives, and allow sufficient time to conduct a thoughtful and robust search for the next permanent president of Mount St. Mary’s University.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I thank you for your continued commitment to the Mount and offer best wishes for a pleasant summer.
Mary D. Kane
Chair, Board of Trustees
