Mount St. Mary’s Seminary Alumnus Named Bishop of Richmond

Bishop Barry KnestoutEMMITSBURG, Md. (December 5, 2017) – Washington Auxiliary Bishop Barry C. Knestout, a graduate of the Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in 1989, has been named bishop of Richmond, Virginia, by Pope Francis.

Bishop Knestout has served as auxiliary bishop of Washington since 2008, functioning as chief of staff to Cardinal Donald Wuerl and overseeing the archdiocese’s administrative affairs. After being ordained as an auxiliary bishop in 2008, he became the 50th graduate of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary to become a bishop, and his episcopal ordination happened in the year when the seminary, called the “cradle of bishops,” was celebrating the bicentennial of its 1808 founding.

“At the Mount, I was prepared to be a parish priest, with a good pastoral heart to care for the needs of people,” Bishop Knestout told the Catholic Standard. At a press conference today, Bishop Knestout said he planned to embrace Pope Francis’s advice to U.S. bishops during the pope’s 2015 visit to Washington, D.C., to “be pastors close to people.”

In applauding Bishop Knestout’s appointment, Mount St. Mary’s Seminary Rector Rev. Msgr. Andrew Baker noted Bishop Knestout’s important continuing role at the Mount as a supportive alumnus and as a member of the Seminary Committee of the Mount St. Mary’s Board of Trustees that assists Archbishop William E. Lori, S ’77, in governing and caring for the seminary. “This is an excellent example of how the Mount exports our goodness,” Msgr. Baker said.

Bishop Knestout’s Mass of Installation will be celebrated on January 12 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Richmond.
