Mount St. Mary’s Students to Traverse the Globe for Internships This Summer

Career Center Clare TEMMITSBURG, Md. (May 3, 2018) – Several Mount St. Mary’s University will travel hundreds or even thousands of miles from campus this summer as they extend their classroom learning by gaining practical experience in their chosen field.

The number of Mount students who take advantage of internship opportunities during their college years is growing, with 71 percent of the Class of 2017 completing an internship or field placement before graduation. Because employers look favorably on prior experience, even among new graduates, this figure will continue to rise over the next several years, said Clare Tauriello, director of the MSMU Career Center.

Summer internships offer the advantage of dedicated time to the experience without competing coursework or requiring more than four years to graduate.  Below are a sampling of internships that Mount students have secured this summer:

  • Katelyn Comeau, C’19, a biochemistry major, will do research in the Ginty Lab at Harvard University. David Ginty, Ph.D., C’84, is the Edward R. and Anne G. Lefler Professor of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School. His lab’s research addresses the function, organization, and mechanisms of assembly of the peripheral nervous system and spinal cord circuits that underlie the sense of touch.
  • Erik Menjivar, C’21, an environmental science major, will be an intern at the University of Lyon in France, doing research in photocatalysis.
  • Veronica Balick, C’20, a biology and biochemistry major, will be conducting research during an internship at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Balick will be researching leukemia.
  • Cameron O’Malley, C’19, an education major, landed an internship in the educational programs of the Carter Center in Atlanta.
  • Lesly Alvarez, C’19, will delve into international relations work in her internship at the Embassy of Panama.
