Jennifer Staiger Tapped as Mount’s Associate Provost of Graduate, Professional and Continuing Education

Jen StaigerEMMITSBURG, Md. (June 11, 2018) – Jennifer Staiger, Ph.D., Mount St. Mary’s University’s interim dean of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics (SNSM), has accepted a position as associate provost of graduate, continuing and professional education programs, based at the Frederick campus.

Staiger will officially take on her new responsibilities on July 1, when Carol Rinkoff, Ph.D., steps down from her leadership position as dean of graduate, continuing and professional studies. At the same time, Kraig Sheetz, Ph.D., currently vice dean of operations at the United States Military Academy at West Point, will begin service to the university as dean of SNSM.

“The Mount is fortunate to have multifaceted strong leaders, guiding our growing graduate, continuing and professional studies,” said President Timothy E. Trainor, Ph.D. “Through her work and dedication, Carol Rinkoff boosted enrollment, increased the visibility of the Fredrick campus in the surrounding community and improved the academic experience for all adult students. Jen Staiger, who has driven the development of new academic programs and partnerships with area colleges as interim dean of SNSM, will provide the leadership necessary to build upon recent success at the Frederick campus.”

Provost Boyd Creasman expressed his excitement to work with Staiger to bring even greater success to the Frederick campus and community. “I am confident that Jen will succeed in bringing out the best of the talented and dedicated faculty and staff in Frederick to benefit students as well as develop partnerships with other higher education institutions and corporate partners to enhance the community,” Creasman said.

Staiger, who joined the Mount’s science faculty in 2004, received tenure in 2011 and was promoted to full professor in 2016.  She served five years as Honors Program director and four years as chair for the Department of Science. In 2017 Staiger was appointed interim dean for SNSM.

“I am excited to provide educational opportunities that strengthen the region’s industries, especially those that are STEM based,” said Staiger. “We already are providing opportunities for the growing number of biotechnology and biopharmaceutical professionals in the region through graduate and certificate programs, and there is much more that we can do to strengthen the skills of employees in science, computational, business and education professions.”

Prior to coming to the Mount, Staiger spent five years working at the National Cancer Institute doing research on proteins that regulate cell growth and inflammation in cancer.  She holds a Bachelor of Science in biotechnology from University of Delaware and a Ph.D. in pathobiology and molecular pathogenesis from Uniformed Sciences University of Health Science.
