High school students at Saint John’s Catholic Prep will have a chance this fall to get a taste of college life.

The school has partnered with Mount St. Mary’s University to offer its students the chance to enroll in two college courses next year. The university will offer a criminal justice course in the fall and a sociology class in the spring at the Mount’s satellite campus in Frederick.

“We wanted to make sure we were offering classes that we didn’t offer in our curriculum,” said Saint John’s Principal Marc Minsker. “We didn’t want to do calculus because we offer calculus here.”

Minsker said the hope is to eventually offer two classes per semester, but the school wanted to make sure it could fill one class each semester before offering a second.

Any student who meets the following requirements will be allowed to sign up for the classes: must be a junior or a senior, must receive permission from their parents or guardians, must receive a recommendation from Minsker to cross-register and score higher than a 500 on any section of the SAT.

Students who meet the requirements are allowed and encouraged to take both classes.

Students will receive both high school and college credit for both classes, Minsker said. One of the benefits of offering the partnership with Mount St. Mary’s is the likelihood that credits will transfer.

“We offer the dual credit with [Frederick Community College] as well, but what we have found is sometimes those credits won’t transfer for students who go to college outside of Maryland,” Minsker said. “We feel confident these credits will transfer where ever they choose to go.”

Both classes will be taught by Tim Wolfe, director of human services in the sociology and criminal justice department.

Thomas Powell, a longtime president of Mount St. Mary’s, was excited to have Wolfe agree to teach the classes. He said Wolfe will provide a rigorous course that will give students the most college-like experience.

“The Mount and Saint John’s share a unique history as historic Catholic schools in Frederick County,” Powell said. “We believe that this partnership will be a big benefit to our students. They will be exposed to the best Mount faculty and hopefully help our students learn about the high-quality educational opportunities close to home.”

Said interim Mount St. Mary’s President Tim Trainor: “We are thrilled to begin this partnership with Saint John’s Catholic Prep. This program allows the Mount to expand the opportunities to provide a values-based education to high school students looking to make a difference.”
