Learning Services: Student Support and Retention Specialist/MountCares Program Coordinator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Student Support and Retention Specialist works within the Department of Learning Services and oversees the Mount’s at-risk student referral program, MountCares. This program identifies struggling students and provides necessary support for academic success.  Faculty and staff who have any concerns about a student can refer them to Learning Services through the MountCares program. The Student Support and Retention Specialist gathers these referrals and follows up, as necessary.

This position supports Learning Services’ overall mission of identifying struggling students, meeting one-on-one with students and teaching academic skills and strategies for success. The Student Support and Retention Specialist also sits on the Academic Review Committee.

The goal of this position is to provide services that promote the success, retention, and graduation of Mount students. 

This is a full-time 12-month administrative position and reports to the Director of Learning Services.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.      As the designated case manager for all students referred through MountCares, the Student Support and Retention Specialist is responsible for:

  •  Gathering, organizing and maintaining record of all referrals.
  •  Communicating with students (who have been referred), as appropriate.
  •  Communicating with faculty and academic advisors.
  •  Communicating with Residence Life, Counseling Services, and any other campus resource, as necessary.
  • Working, in conjunction with Associate Provost and Learning Services’ staff, on the development and implementation of a success plan for each student referral.
  •  Following up with the original referral source, as appropriate, and sharing the success plan.
  •  Keeping detailed electronic records of each referral including all follow-up communications and final resolution.

2.    This position provides direct academic support, via one-on-one meetings, to:

  • students referred through MountCares and the Academic Review processes,
  • students on academic probation and dismissal alert,
  • Students with documented disabilities.
  • Other students as assigned.
  • The Student Support and Retention Specialist must also:
  • Protect the confidentiality of student records under applicable laws, including FERPA, the ADA, and Section 504 of the Vocational Rehabilitation Act.
  • Communicate with the Director, Assistant Director, and all Learning Services professional staff members regarding student progress and concerns.
  • Establish effective working relationships with Learning Services staff, faculty, and administrators in order to assess student learning and to develop, implement, and monitor the academic success of students.
  • Do presentations and run workshops for the campus community on the MountCares program, study skills, other topics as assigned.
  • Represent the Department of Learning Services during the June and August Orientation programs, Open Houses and Accepted Student Days, as necessary.
  • Maintain knowledge of current trends within the field, including attendance at professional development opportunities when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director, Provost or President.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor's Degree in Education/Special Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, and Post-secondary Student Support Services, or related field. 
  2. Minimum of two years work experience:
  3. Doing case management with students.
  4. Working with at-risk students at the post-secondary level.
  5. Have knowledge of various learning theories and academic strategies, including time management, learning styles, test-taking, note-taking, and textbook reading.
  6. Experience in academic plans and working with students with disabilities.
  7. Possess excellent communication and organizational skills.
  8. Ability to work in partnership with staff, faculty, and administrators.
  9. Ability to work in a fast-paced and demanding environment, meet deadlines, manage multiple tasks, and reprioritize projects as needed.
  10. Demonstrated understanding and strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  11. Be proficient in Microsoft Office, Outlook, and Canvas.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Master’s degree preferred.
  2. Prior experience working in a post-secondary academic support and/or advising setting.
  3. Knowledge of Simplicity’s Advocate.
