Grounds/Logistic Worker 2

Minimum Pay Rate:  $11.50/per hour
Works Hours: Full-Time, 40/hours per week, M-F, Weekends (see Job Hours for specifics)

Experience

3+ years of experience required, must have current driver’s license. Grounds must be able to obtain DOT card.

Education

  • High school diploma or GED.

  • Grounds - Must register for pesticide and fertilizer licensing and complete provided training along with MD state test’s to obtain state licensing. All state fees and training will be provided by MSMU. State license must be obtained within 3 years, dependent on state mandates. Must complete state required continuing education credits annually to maintain license.

  • Logistics – Must attain any required continuing education on-site training applicable to Logistics or Physical Plant.

Job Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

Grounds

  • Must be knowledgeable of all basic aspects of general landscaping, including planting, pruning, shearing, mulching, mowing, trimming, blowing, leaf removal, snow removal, watering, policing grounds, trash removal, paver or wall installations, grading and turf renovation, sod installation, fertilizer and pesticide application, weeding, tree removal, and basic computer/record keeping.

  • May be asked to assist any other department within the campus community and will be required to perform any other duties as assigned by immediate Supervisor/Manager/Director.

  • Must be willing and able to work independently without supervision.

  • Snow removal duties will be necessary seasonally.

  • A uniform, issued by MSMU will be required. Will assist with logistical events as needed.

Logistics

  • Event set-ups/breakdowns, including tents, stages, floor covering, barricades, tables, chairs etc.

  • Office moves, including furniture, file cabinets, etc. Dormitory moves including beds/bunking beds, desks, chests, etc.

  • Operation of floor machines as necessary, and other tasks as assigned.

  • Operates forklifts, mechanical lift gates and mechanical platforms to facilitate loading and unloading of materials, as appropriate to the areas of operation.

  • Operates a large moving truck in the transportation of moving materials, as necessary.

  • Will assume Lead Foreman position if Lead is not available.

  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

  • May serve as the main contact person in communications with customers regarding work orders.

  • May train employees on safety, moving techniques, and MSMU policies.

  • Snow removal duties will be necessary seasonally.

  • Will assist with grounds duties as needed.

Equipment Operations and Maintenance

Grounds/Logistics - Must understand or be willing to learn basic operation and maintenance of backpack blowers, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, riding/walk-behind mowers with attachments, aerators, snow blowers, UTV’s with spraying units, spreaders and plows, Hustlers, skid loaders with attachments and fork lifts, tractors and attachments, backhoes, trucks with snow plows, spreaders, trailers, floor cleaning/polishing equipment and dollies. Employees may be asked to use any other equipment used by MSMU.

Job Hours

Standard Grounds hours are Monday – Friday, 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. including weekend rotation as needed, unless otherwise specified. Logistical hours will vary depending upon University events but will typically range between 6:30am-8:00pm with varying weekly schedules. Overtime during weekdays, weekends and holidays will be required as needed for both Grounds and Logistics. A weekend rotation schedule will be implemented depending upon staffing, workloads and University events. Any schedule may be adjusted as needed and some overnights will be required with inclement weather, university events or campus emergencies.

Physical Requirements

1. Must be able to lift 100 lbs.
2. Must be able to lift and carry heavy loads up and down stairs.
3. Must be able to work in all types of weather.
4. Must be able to work well as a team.

Supervision

May supervise student aides and temporary workers.
