Lifeguard - Campus Recreation

Minimum Pay Rate:  MD minimum wage
Works Hours: Part Time - 10-20 hours per week/weekends

Free membership to use the ARCC facilities. 

Lifeguards report directly to the Aquatic Coordinator and to other members of the Campus Recreation Staff in the absence of the Aquatic Coordinator. (Directors and Assistant Directors of Campus Recreation and the Recreation Facility Supervisors)  Lifeguards provide a safe environment for all swimmers and program participants.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintains a safe environment in the pool area with the objective of preventing accidents, injuries, and incidents.

  2. Ensures that safety standards are met.

  3. Enforces the aquatic and facility rules and policies.

  4. Performs water rescues as necessary.

  5. Performs first aid as necessary.

  6. Performs CPR as necessary.

  7. Is responsible for all scheduled hours and must find a substitute if unable to work.

    • Substitutes must be reported to the aquatic coordinator and/or the recreation facility supervisor on duty in the absence of the aquatic coordinator.

    • If the employee is unable to secure a substitute, he or she is expected to report to work as assigned.

  8. Performs cleaning duties as assigned.

  9. Assists in setting up and putting away equipment needed for fitness classes and swimming lessons.

  10. Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

  1. Must be at least 16 years of age.

  2. Must possess current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding.

  3. Prior experience is preferred.

Physical Demands

  1. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to stand, walk, balance, stoop, use the hands to move equipment, and reach with the hands and arms.

  2. The employee must be able to lift and/or move 20 lbs.

  3. Employee must be prepared to perform water rescues, remove a victim from the water, perform first aid, CPR, and use an AED.

  4. Employee must be able to direct other staff members and bystanders to assist in the event of an emergency.

  5. The employee must possess an appropriate degree of energy for the duties assigned to him/her.

  6. The employee must be able to project his/her voice over the noise of the pool so that the swimmers are able to hear any necessary instructions.

  1. While performing duties of this job, the employee will occasionally work near moving mechanical parts. 

  2. The employee will be exposed to both wet and dry conditions, pool chemical fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals.

  3. The noise level in the pool area is usually in the mid-range with excessive echoing.
