Men's Rugby

Mens Rugby Team 2015

In the archives of Mount St. Mary's University there are references to a sport being played in 1891 on the school's older fields where the ball could not be thrown forward. In the modern era, our organized roots go back to 1973.

Currently Mount Saint Mary's Rugby is ranked 4th in the nation with an undefeated 2014 matrix season. While the Mount St. Mary's Rugby Football Club (MSMRFC) matrix season resides in the National Small College bracket under the Potomac Rugby Conference the Mount program prides itself on competing against some of the toughest programs at the Division II level as well. Competing at such a level allows new and experienced players to hone their skills in order to accomplish the programs ultimate goal of winning a national championship.

The intention of this club is not only to succeed on the pitch but also to promote brotherhood, establish fraternal relations with other teams, and be of service to the community off the pitch to our best ability. The fraternity on the team far exceeds any other men's club on campus, and no one is excluded from the group.

The team has one of the best coaching staffs around. Led by its head Coach Jay Myles, who seamlessly orchestrates the backline as well as developing new and potent attack plans to stay one step ahead of the competition. Along side Coach Myles, is Jim Bonner, the programs assistant Coach, whose defensive strategies and dynamic forward play coincide with Coach Myles' attack developing a recipe for success. In the Fall of 2014, the team made a new addition to the coaching staff when new forwards coach, Tory Ireland, came aboard. One of Coach Myles's beliefs is that he doesn't have all the answers therefore he promises his players that he will do everything in his power to put the best coaches in front of them to further develop their rugby knowledge and skill sets. For instance, the team has drawn in a variety of international coaches in past years including, Eric Miller of Ireland's national side and current Leinster Coach; Hennie Van Zyl of the South African Springboks, Scott Robertson, former New Zealand All-Black, and Serge Betsen of France's national side. In 2014, Mount Rugby hosted the Pro-Performance Rugby program which boasts one of the most impressive coaching staffs in the world.

The coaching staff is now beginning to spread the Mount rugby tradition into the summers with new summer men's rugby camps for current players and U19 prospects interested in Mount rugby, or just interested in rugby in general.
