Graduate Certificate of Advanced Study in Reading

The Certificate of Advanced Study in Reading prepares the certified teacher for the professional role of reading specialist/literacy coach in grades K-12.

A reading specialist is, first and foremost, a literacy coach. The specialist supports classroom teachers in their instruction and assessment of students' literacy development. In addition, a reading specialist/literacy coach is a consumer and purveyor of literacy research, sharing findings and leading inquiry efforts. Specialists are literacy leaders in the school and community. Coursework for the Certificate of Advanced Study in Reading highlights the particular needs of English language learners.

Admission Requirements & Application

Individuals wishing to apply for admission into a Certificate of Advanced Study in Reading program must have a Master’s degree.

Program Details

The certificate program consists of 30 credit hours (8 courses and one 6-credit practicum). The program is nationally recognized by the International Reading Association and is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Candidates are required to fulfill particular coursework assignments in the school setting well in advance of the reading practicum. This certificate program is only available to teachers who already have a Master's degree.
