Special Olympics Fall Sports Festival at Mount St. Mary’s University
Emmitsburg, Maryland – Mount St. Mary’s University announces it is hosting the 24th annual Special Olympics’ Fall Sports Festival on Saturday October 20th. Opening ceremonies kick-off at 9:00 a.m. with events continuing until 7:00 p.m.
Over 400 athletes are expected to take part in this year’s Fall Sports Festival, competing in a number of events including, tennis, flag football, power lifting, distance running and cycling. The event is organized and staffed with roughly 200 Mount St. Mary’s University students.
“For almost a quarter of a century our strong partnership with the Special Olympics has given Mount students a great opportunity to take part-in and witness first-hand this positive community event,” said the Mount’s Director of the Office of Social Justice, Jeff Abel. “The Festival is based on what an athlete can achieve with positive support and community backing. All of these events are inspirational competitions to watch.”
To further the Mount’s mission of graduating students who embrace community responsibility, the Mount offers a Sports Management course entitled, Program Development and Implementation: Special Olympics. The course, taught by members of the Special Olympics administration, guides and allows students to take the lead on planning, volunteering and implementing the Cycling event in the Fall Sports Festival.
All sporting events will take place at the Knott's Athletic Recreation Convocation Complex (ARCC) in the PNC Sports Complex on the Mount’s Emmitsburg, Maryland Campus.
