Frequently Asked Questions

Do all new Mount presidents have inauguration celebrations?

All recent presidents of Mount St. Mary’s University have had inauguration celebrations. The president of any university is entrusted with the duty of caring for the entirety of the institution: its students, faculty, staff and alumni, but also its unique history, mission and future. As such, it is fitting that universities have academic liturgies in which the university community formally entrusts the university to the new president. This inauguration ceremony will be a time to reflect on the mission and story of the Mount, and how this mission and story will continue unfold under the guidance of President Jerry Joyce, Ph.D.

Who was the president before President Joyce?

Retired Brig. Gen. Timothy E. Trainor, Ph.D., served as president from 2016 to 2024. He expertly guided the university through two destabilizing periods: the leadership crisis that brought him to the Mount and the pandemic.

Is there a fund I can donate to in honor of President Joyce?

Yes. Donations in can be made in Memory of Thomas P. McFadden, Class of 1977.

Thomas P. McFadden, beloved husband, father, brother and uncle, passed away on July 26, 2020. He was part of the Mount St. Mary’s Class of 1977 and is remembered fondly by all who knew him. Thomas was an avid runner who embraced the beauty of the mountainous surroundings of his alma mater. His love for nature was profound, finding solace and a spiritual connection with God through the Great Out Doors.

In honor of Thomas McFadden’s memory, President Joyce and his wife, Erin, who is Thomas' niece, have requested that any donations for the inauguration be directed to the Thomas McFadden Fund, which will allow President Joyce to support ongoing opportunities at Mount St. Mary’s, such as the Outdoor Adventure Program which embodies Thomas’ love for nature and adventure.
