Start your free applicationThe Mount's Master of Education with a concentration in reading program is designed to prepare you to serve as a reading specialist for your school. After graduation, you'll be able to seek advanced certification as a reading specialist, K-12, from the Maryland State Department of Education.
The program will cover literacy assessment and intervention, reading in secondary content areas, and literacy instruction for culturally and linguistically diverse and neurodiverse students. Courses will also cover how the reading specialist plans and delivers research-based professional development workshops for colleagues, and communicates data-driven decisions with K-12 learners, their parents, colleagues and policy makers.
Lastly, a practicum will give you the opportunity to participate on a school-based literacy team and teach K-12 students under the mentorship of a certified reading specialist. The practicum emphasizes using assessments to develop and deliver reading interventions to individuals and small groups of students, as well as designing and providing professional development for other educators, paraprofessionals and parents.
With a Master of Education with a concentration in reading, you can pursue positions such as a reading specialist at public or private schools.

Graduates of the program are eligible for certification as a reading specialist, K-12, from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE).

Graduate level programs are designed to be taken one course at a time and program pricing is set by credit hours instead of by the year like traditional undergraduate programs.

Students enrolled on at least half-time basis (6-credits per semester) may qualify for financial aid. You may seek financial assistance through federal and state-funded programs, private loan providers, or deferment of undergraduate loans.
