CASPA Is Opening Soon: How to Prepare a Strong PA School Application (Before You Submit)

Every year, the opening of CASPA marks the beginning of an exciting and competitive journey for future physician assistant students. While it may feel like the starting line, the most successful applicants know that preparation begins well before hitting “submit.”

If you’re planning to apply this cycle, here’s how to position yourself for success.

1. Start Early… Earlier Than You Think

CASPA may open soon, but strong applications are built weeks (or months) in advance.

Before submitting, you should:

  • Request transcripts from all institutions
  • Confirm prerequisite completion
  • Begin creating your description of patient care experience
  • Begin drafting your personal statement

Starting early helps you avoid delays and gives you time to refine your materials.

2. Understand Your Program Requirements

Not all PA programs are the same.

Make sure you carefully review:

  • Required prerequisite courses
  • GPA expectations
  • Patient care experience requirements
  • Application deadlines

Missing even one requirement can delay or disqualify your application, so attention to detail matters.

3. Be Strategic About Patient Care Experience

One important part of your application is your patient care experience.

Strong applicants:

  • Clearly document their hours
  • Highlight hands-on responsibilities
  • Reflect on what they learned

Instead of just listing your role, explain your impact and growth in a healthcare setting.

4. Write a Thoughtful Personal Statement

Your personal statement is your opportunity to stand out.

Avoid:

  • Generic statements
  • Repeating statements

Focus on:

  • Why you chose the PA profession
  • Experiences that shaped your decision
  • What you bring to the field

A compelling story can make a lasting impression on admissions committees.

5. Secure Strong Letters of Recommendation

Choose recommenders who truly know you.

Ideal recommenders include:

  • Healthcare supervisors
  • Professors in science courses
  • Practicing PAs or physicians

Give them plenty of time and provide context about your goals so they can write a meaningful letter.

6. Submit Early—Not Just On Time

Many applicants don’t realize that CASPA applications go through a verification process, which can take time.

Submitting early allows:

  • Time for verification
  • Opportunity to fix issues
  • Earlier review by programs

Early applicants often have a strategic advantage. Here at the Mount, all applications must be marked “COMPLETE” in CASPA by the deadline to be considered for admission.

Final Thoughts

Applying to PA school is a significant step… but with preparation, clarity, and intention, you can build a competitive application.

If you’re applying this cycle, now is the time to start preparing. Your future in healthcare begins with the steps you take today.
