Data Science

Data scientists extract meaning from complex data and transform it into useful data products. How can companies acquire data and prepare it for effective and predictive decision-making? Are there ethical considerations of data mining and privacy? How can big data solutions and statistical analysis shape the world around us and resolve problems facing humanity? Those who create machine learning models and communicate technical ideas with precision and clarity have a deep understanding of the ever-evolving world of data science.

School of Natural Science and Mathematics

The data science program is part of the School of Natural Science and Mathematics. Our goal as a department is to graduate women and men that are uniquely equipped to provide scientific perspective and solutions to the complex problems facing humanity.

About the major.

Data scientists are an ever-growing, much needed, valuable resource in nearly every competitive industry today. Data science professionals transform complex data into useful and profitable products and applications. Informed with analytics, they offer businesses and companies the confidence to take the next frontiers on innovation, competition and productivity.

With a bachelor’s degree in data science from the Mount, you’ll develop skills in statistics, mathematics and computer science. The program offers foundational and practical understanding of computer programming, data privacy and security, high performance computing techniques, management and governance fundamentals. Graduates of the program will be well prepared to assess technical, social and ethical challenges and to create and adapt to the future of a data-driven workplace.

Our data science lab contains a variety of equipment that you’ll use in the classroom and for projects—and with 24/7 access, you can work wherever it fits into your schedule.

With a data science degree from the Mount, you’ll be positioned to apply your data science skills to your chosen application area including data scientist, data architecture, business analytics, network science, medical systems planning, crime data analysis, human resources or stock portfolio analysis. Graduates are well prepared for advanced study in a variety of fields from economics to science to mathematics.

Where Data Science Majors Go

Recent Mathematics and Computer Science graduates have been employed by the following organizations, among many others:

  • Northrup Grumman
  • Raytheon
  • Lockheed Martin
  • Johns Hopkins Advanced Physics Laboratory
  • Patuxent River Naval Air Station
  • NSA
  • SAIC
  • Booz Allen Hamilton

Since 2016, Glassdoor has consistently reported data scientists near the top of the 50 Best Jobs in America.

About the minor.

The Mount’s data science minor can be a great complement to many majors. Pair the minor with a computer science degree and become a database administrator for a technology company, an accounting major and reconstruct financial records for banking institutions, or a mathematics degree and become an information scientist for a government or research organization.
