About the major and certification.

In the Spanish / French – certification in education (P-12) program, you’ll teach students about language and culture, providing avenues for different perspectives. This background may even prompt an interest in a career in international business, working with foreign governments, assisting relief organizations that aid regions recovering from natural disasters or war, or helping those that have immigrated from other countries become acclimated and comfortable.

In addition, you’ll also gain knowledge and practical classroom experience on the education side, learning about teaching competencies, educational policies, learning theory and human development, and how to evaluate students.

The program culminates with an internship and professional seminar, enabling you to practice the skills you’ve developed in real-world situations. After certification, you’ll be able to teach students from pre-K through sixth – and if you have a major in an academic subject field, you’ll be able to teach at the secondary level as well.

This can enable you to educate younger students in a broader sense, or focus more on a specific language, such as French or Spanish with students in secondary education. You’ll help them learn to become more global members of society as they seek to make positive change both here and abroad.

These secondary education certification programs lead to certification in grades P–12. Each student who plans to teach at the secondary level must have a content area major.

An advisor in the School of Education will be assigned upon the student’s admission to a teacher education program, though the primary advisor resides in the major department. The student is responsible for knowing and meeting the requirements and deadlines for internship, program completion and certification, as well as all graduation requirements of the major department and of the university. The Maryland approved programs in secondary teacher education meet requirements for certification in other states. Students are advised, however, to consult certification requirements in states of interest early in their study.
