Mount St. Mary’s University is home to a part-time, online synchronous Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree. Balance your current career while you pursue your passion to teach.
Courses are offered year-round in an online synchronous format. Class schedules do not compete with work schedules; however, field and internship requirements may require teacher candidates to take time off from work.
The Online Master of Arts in teaching degree is part of the School of Education. Rigorous programs and close interaction with acclaimed faculty ensure that graduates leave the Mount ready to make a difference in a rapidly changing educational environment.

Programs culminate in the earning of a Mount St. Mary’s degree. As all Mount education programs are approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), successful completion of all program requirements leads to eligibility for certification to teach in Maryland and states with reciprocity agreements with the MSDE. Students are advised, however, to consult certification requirements in states of interest early in their study. Teacher education programs are accredited through the Association for Advancing Quality Educator Preparation (AAQEP).

I am a career switcher who finally decided to follow my passion, and it’s been the best decision that I’ve made for myself academically, and professionally! Starting at the Mount as a first-year teacher enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching program, I excelled in my studies and applied what I learned in my second-grade classroom. After graduating with my master's degree, I won Teacher of the Year!

Students enrolled on at least half-time basis (6-credits per semester) may qualify for financial aid. You may seek financial assistance through federal and state-funded programs, private loan providers, or deferment of undergraduate loans.

Graduate Student Financial AidThe Online MAT is designed for individuals who hold a bachelor’s degree in a field other than Education and are seeking a master’s degree with certification to teach.
Students learn how to teach, not what to teach. Therefore, the program requires you demonstrate significant content knowledge in the area of certification being pursued.
