To help make the admissions process as smooth as possible, follow these steps to get started on reaching your educational goals:

Step 1 - Complete a free online application

Complete a free online application and apply to one of the Mount St. Mary’s degree programs.

Step 2 - Submit all required documents

  1. Provide certified copies in English translation of all college/university level courses, grades, and conferred degrees. The university highly recommends the use of World Education Services WES so that we can best assess your candidacy. Please request a course-by-course evaluation.
  2. Provide a copy of your Resume and upload through your Student Portal.
  3. Provide proof of demonstrated English language proficiency. Students need to submit one or more of the following accepted documents:
    • Hold the equivalent (evidenced by credential evaluation) of a U.S. Baccalaureate Degree from a non-U.S. institution in which instruction is delivered primarily in English.
    • Submit official test score from IELTS (International English Language Testing System) with a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5. The School Code is 5421.
    • Submit official test score from TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum overall TOEFL score of 100 (internet-based) or 250 (computer-based test). The School Code is 5421.
    • Provide a copy of a U.S. high school diploma or U.S. General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or international high school diploma, e.g., U.S. military base, business/diplomat expat community, etc., in which instruction is delivered primarily in English.
    • Complete (with passing grades of C or better in all courses) a minimum of two (2) academic terms at a regionally or nationally accredited U.S. post-secondary institution in which instruction is delivered primarily in English.

Step 3 - Check your status on your Application Status Portal

Check your status on your Application Status Portal. It is important to check your portal often to see important communications from the university along with a list of any materials we still need to make an admissions decision. You can also upload supporting documents in your portal.

Step 4 - Complete the Decision Form

Once admitted, complete the Decision Form. Upon acceptance to the degree program, the international student must complete the Decision Form through their application portal. This form lets the university know that you are accepting our offer of admission.

Step 5 - Follow the I-20 process

Follow the process in the I-20 Requirements section to obtain an F-1 Visa to study in the United States.

If you have questions about the admissions process, please contact the Graduate School Admissions Office.

I-20 Requirements

Mount St. Mary's University has the approval of the United States Citizen and Immigration Services (USCIS) to enroll foreign students into its degree programs. An international student wishing to study in the United States must have a non-immigrant F-1 Student Visa. If you are not a U.S. citizen, a U.S. permanent resident, or hold other legal status, you need an F-1 student visa to study in the United States. Visas are issued by United States embassies and consulates not colleges or universities. In order to obtain your F-1 visa, you will first be required to obtain an I-20 issued by the university. You cannot be issued an I-20 until after you have been accepted to Mount St. Mary's University and completed the proper paperwork. Please submit the following requirements so that we can complete our review of your documents:

Step 1 - Submit required materials

Submit these required materials needed to review prior to issuing an I-20:

  • Provide a copy of your passport through your Student Portal. Your passport must be valid for at least six months after entry into the United States.
  • Upload your completed Financial Affidavit form and certified bank statements through your Student Portal. A Financial Affidavit is a certified bank statement or sworn statement of support documenting that adequate funds are available to pay the full educational and living expenses in the United States for each year of enrollment.
  • Projected costs and dates are as follows:
    • Enrollment Status: Full-Time
    • Initial Session Start Date: August 19, 2024
    • Enrollment End Date: May 10, 2026
    • Current year tuition: $25,200 1
    • Estimated Annual Living Expenses in the Maryland Area: $27,756 2
    • Estimated Cost of Books: $2,400 3
    • Estimated Cost of Health Insurance: $2,400 4
    • Total Estimated Cost for One Year of Study: $57,756
  • Complete the International Student Information form that is in your Student Portal.

1Based on tuition for the 2023-24 academic year. Subject to change. source: Mount St. Mary’s Tuition and Fees.

2 Based on data on Frederick, Maryland from livingcost.org.

3Based on costs from the Mount Bookstore.

4Based on costs from healthcare.gov.

Step 2 - Wait for Mount DSO to issue a Form I-20

The Mount DSO will issue a Form I-20: Certificate of Eligibility of Nonimmigrant Student Status after all I-20 documents have been reviewed and verified. This I-20 will be uploaded to the student admissions status portal for students to use to obtain their International F-1 student visa.

Step 3 - Get the International F-1 Student Visa Stamp

Get the International F-1 Student Visa Stamp. International students must work with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to obtain the international F-1 Student Visa Stamp which is needed to enter the United States.

  1. Student (or delegate) will have to complete the electronic I-901 form and pay the $350 SEVIS fee with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. An electronic form I-797 is then issued as a receipt proving the fee was paid (note: no paper receipt will be issued).
  2. Student completes the electronic DS-160 Non-Immigrant Visa Application and prints out the confirmation for submission to the U.S. embassy/consulate. (Canadian citizens do not need an F-1 visa to study in the USA but must have a valid I-20 and proof of payment of the SEVIS fee.)
  3. Students then make an appointment with the closest US embassy or consulate office for visa interview.
  4. After the embassy grants the visa stamp (it may take four or more days for processing), the student can make travel arrangements for arrival in the U.S. (no sooner than 30 days before the I-20 “beginning” date, and no later than that date).

Accompanying Family Members

If you have immediate family members (spouse and/or children) who will accompany you, each must be included on your I-20 and must apply for their own F-2 visa. To request for immediate family member(s) to be included you must submit a photocopy of each person's passport, provide documentation certifying your relationship (marriage certificate or child's birth certificate), and provide additional financial support documentation to show you will have adequate funds available to you to support your family as well as your own living expenses and educational program. It is important to note that dependents are NOT eligible for SSN and may NOT work.

Learn more about bringing dependents to the United States.

I-20 Transfers

International students with a previous I-20 record that is being transferred to the Mount do not need a new F-1 Visa stamp to attend Mount St. Mary's University. The old F-1 Visa stamp in the passport is still valid for travel into the USA (even though a different school is listed) as long as the date has not yet expired. In addition, the international student must have maintained status with a current I-20.

Important Notes

  • An I-20 will not be issued for a conditional or provisional admission to an academic degree program.
  • If you are transferring a SEVIS I-20 please contact the Graduate New Student DSO.
  • Please note, financial aid is not available for International Graduate students.
  • It is your responsibility to always maintain your lawful nonimmigrant status. Should you fail to maintain status, there may be serious consequences and you may have to end your program and leave the United States.

As with all U.S. educational institutions, the Mount is required by federal law to maintain records for such students through the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). The Primary Designated SEVIS Official (PDSO) is responsible for processing and maintaining international student visa records for all university programs.
