Esports & Gaming Program

About Esports at the Mount

esports players

The esports program at Mount St. Mary’s is multi-faceted. We have competitive teams playing a number of games including League of Legends, NBA2K, Overwatch, Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. These teams are supported by the university in the same way as traditional student-athletes, with scheduled practices, priority course registration, an exercise regimen and academic support services. In addition to competitive teams, the program also supports club teams for players who want to compete but who play less popular games or who don’t want to play at the highest levels.

The esports program has a dedicated space in Purcell Hall, with over 2,200 square feet of floor space. Part of the space in Purcell is reserved as a practice space for teams, while the rest of the space is open to all students most hours of every day. This allows Purcell to function both as a social space and a space for practice and games simultaneously. In addition to gaming PCs, there are a number of consoles set up, as well as a booth for casting and streaming.

In addition to competitive and recreational teams, the esports program also boasts a minor. The minor is designed to be paired with a number of majors, including sports business, computer science or communications, in order to prepare students who want to enter the esports or games industry. Having the minor paired with the program allows for those in the minor to gain experience in roles such as managing teams, producing digital content and running networks.
