Get outside. Challenge yourself. Connect with others.
Becoming involved with cycling at the Mount will give you those opportunities and so much more.
Students who are interested in joining the Mount Cycling Club should contact Ian Schwing, club president, or Mount St. Mary's Executive Vice President Kraig Sheetz, Ph.D., club sponsor.
The Mount is home to world class mountain biking, road riding, and gravel. Our mountain trail system is connected to the Emmitsburg watershed that has 13 miles of mountain biking engineered and maintained trails.
A few miles to the north is Michaux State Forest, which is some of the most technical riding in the world.
About the same distance to the south is the Frederick watershed. It consistes of everything from flowy single track, to technical gnarly rock gardens, to a professionally designed dual slalom course. The USAC Marathon National Championship will be held there this October. And if there is too much snow on the ground Ski Liberty is 10 minutes away.
Trailhead is a five-minute ride from dorms.
A 15-minute bike ride on road to trail head.
A 20-minute bike ride on road.
Our club was started by Ian Schwing, C'25, whose father started riding our mountain as a freshman in 1988. Ian is nationally ranked mountain biker. As a high school racer he won the Maryland and Virginia Hish School series. He was also awarded 2018 NICA TREK All-Star Student-Athlete award and in 2020 he was awarded the NICA Specialized Student-Athlete Leadership award. Ian has the support of the Mount leadership to make our program the best in the country. He looks forward to riding with you.
As there are 28 spokes on the modern mountain bike, please consider becoming a part of the Spokes Club in support of Mount Cycling by making a gift of $28 dollars. Your gift directly impacts the growth and success of the Mount Cycling Program, helping students like Ian fulfill their passion, and bringing to campus a new premier sport for the Mount to excel in.
