The Center for Service & Justice has partnered with The Carrier Pigeon Post to bring student articles and stories to incarcerated populations across multiple prison systems, including those of the State of Florida and the United Kingdom. Writing sessions will be held in McGowan 116 every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
What is The Carrier Pigeon Post? The Carrier Pigeon Post is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to restore hope to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals through stories and education. Each month, The Carrier Pigeon Post publishes and distributes, free of charge, a 4-color, 8-page, hope-filled, newsprint paper. They do so because they believe in the possibilities afforded by narrative-inspired imagination. The Carrier Pigeon Post encourages cultural competency and teaches cultural literacy. The paper features short, 300-500 word stories, written at a 6th-grade level, specifically crafted and curated for those who have been incarcerated. The articles feature narratives, paintings, sculpture, photography, landmarks, political figures, celebrities, literature, historical events and documents, monuments, multicultural folktales, finance and science.
If you have any questions, or wish to submit a piece to The Carrier Pigeon Post, please email cfs@msmary.edu.
Think you have what it takes to solve a crime? The Criminal Justice Student Association invites you to participate in our upcoming Crime Scene Investigation Challenge. Students will form teams of their choice and investigate a mock crime scene inspired by a real case from the Pennsylvania State Police. Teams will be provided with training to analyze and gather evidence and apply critical thinking skills to solve the crime. The challenge will be judged by professional crime scene investigators, and the winning team will receive a prize. Whether you’re studying criminal justice or simply enjoy problem-solving and true crime, this is a unique opportunity to experience what real-world crime scene investigation looks like. Gather your team, put your skills to the test, and see if you can crack the case. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact Melissa Donaldson at m.m.donaldson@email.msmary.edu
Want to stand out in today’s data-driven world? The Certificate in Computational Technology is a six-course (18-credit) program that adds high-demand technical skills to any major. Think of it as a minor with momentum. You’ll develop practical skills in data analysis, coding (R, Python, and Java), modeling, and applied problem-solving — all designed for students without prior technical experience. Why add computational technology to your major? Business majors strengthen their ability to analyze data, build models, and make data-informed decisions. Human services, sociology and psychology majors gain tools for program evaluation, research design, and community data analysis. History, political science, and communication majors develop quantitative and analytical skills that employers increasingly expect across industries. In a world shaped by data, the ability to interpret and apply information sets you apart — no matter your field. No advanced math background is required. Just curiosity and a willingness to build skills employers value. Interested? Contact Program Director Melanie Butler (mbutler@msmary.edu) to learn how you can add Computational Technology to your degree.
