The next workshop this semester in the Transforming the Mount professional development certificate program for employees will be SES 104: Seeing Strengths: An Asset-Based Approach to Student Success. Facilitated by Rosie Bolen, it will be offered on Wednesday, April 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in O’Hara Dining Room and by Zoom. This workshop counts toward the Solidarity, Engagement, & Success track, and is for Mount employees only.
In higher education, students are too often viewed through a deficit lens that emphasizes gaps in preparation, knowledge, motivation, or support. This perspective not only overlooks students’ strengths but also reinforces structural inequities, as lowered expectations often translate into reduced opportunities, weaker support, and ultimately lower performance. An asset-based mindset, on the other hand, recognizes students’ inherent capabilities, cultural wealth, and resilience, and frames challenges as opportunities for growth.
Drawing on Tara Yosso’s (2005) community cultural wealth model and current scholarship on asset-based pedagogy, this workshop invites participants to examine differences between deficit- and asset-based thinking, practice reframing common deficit assumptions, and consider practical strategies for recognizing and building upon student strengths.

The Center for Service & Justice, in partnership with the Town of Emmitsburg, will provide the Emmitsburg Neighborhood Meal on Wednesday, April 8, from 5 to 7 p.m. Volunteers are needed to serve in the kitchen and to eat and engage in fellowship with the community. Monsignor Tinder was a graduate of Mount St. Mary's University (C' 1964) and Seminary (C' 1968) with a lifelong connection to the Mount and commitment to our mission. He was an exemplary servant leader as a priest and pastor. This award honors the legacy of Msgr. Tinder by funding student participation in a conference, meeting, or other event that involves activities aligned with his example. This includes activities such as engaging in training centered around servant leadership, completing professional development toward living out the Mount's mission as a professional in your field, enhancing knowledge of the importance of a liberal arts education, deepening one's faith, or dialoguing about the relationship between faith and reason. Other activities aligned with the goals of the endowment will be considered. This award can be used to fund travel, registration fees, or other costs associated with participation in the event. Current sophomores and juniors who meet the criteria below are eligible to apply for additional scholarship dollars. Multiple students will be selected. If selected, the additional scholarship amounts will range from $500 to $1,800 and are awarded for next year. Application Deadline is April 30, 2026. If you are receiving the Upper-class Scholarship this year, you must reapply to be considered for the 2026-2027 academic year.

The Saint Joseph Alumnae Scholarship is now open to current juniors and seniors. Students with a minimum GPA of 3.0 who demonstrate financial need are eligible for consideration. Recipients will be current university sophomores or juniors during the award period. All applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Friday, May 1. Please submit your application for the SJCA Scholarship.

Women In Sports Day - Baltimore - April 11
Both women's lacrosse and flag football will be celebrating the 2026 Women In Sports Day at the Under Armour Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland on April 11. Women's Lacrosse faces off against Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match up at noon while flag football faces off against Saint Joseph's in an East Coast Athletic Conference match up at 3 p.m.
