In the summer of 2025, Mount St. Mary’s University launched a new initiative to assist new students in their transition to the Mount. During the summer and their first fall semester, new students received help from Mount Guides to get engaged in what the Mount has to offer. Mount Guides received extensive training on university resources and customer service skills, planned engaging activities, assisted with checklist requirements, checked in throughout the semester to offer support, shared upcoming events, and so much more. Their support did not stop there. On many occasions, Mount Guides went above and beyond for their students.
This is your opportunity to share your stories and gratitude with your Mount Guide or another one who made an impact for you this year. Nominate a Mount Guide for the ‘Mount Guide of the Year’ award. This award, along with many others, will be presented at the Student Life Awards on Monday, April 27. Nominations for the ‘Mount Guide of the Year' award will be open until Friday, April 10 at 11:45 p.m.

Chair and Professor of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Human Services Jack Trammell, Ph.D., was a presenter at the International Social Capital Association, Dubai conference on March 26. Dr. Trammell talked about:
The explosive growth of the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in devices, applications, platforms, and in data analysis has thrown some elements of classic social theory into chaos. If Georg Simmel's previously timeless triad now has two humans and an AI instead of three humans, the traditional interactions and assumptions no longer hold true. AI is also demonstrably changing neurology, which impacts social interactions in every social arena. Theories surrounding social capital and its related concepts borrow heavily from classic sociology, social science, psychology, and basic assumptions related to modernity itself. This session will explicitly explore how this radical new paradigm influenced by pervasive AI impacts theories of social capital. Can AI or a specific AI generate its own social capital? How do humans already use AI to negotiate their own social capital? Which forms of social capital are most impacted by the paradigm shift? These and other questions will be considered, with a conclusion that recommends actions that can clarify what is potentially a confusing brave new world.
