About the program.

The Mount's elementary education program integrates liberal arts with technical and managerial skills required to promote learning in the classroom and on an individual level. While in the program, you will learn not only how to teach topics such as reading, writing and mathematics, but how to plan effective lessons and methods of assessment. You will also gain the skills necessary to appropriately manage and teach children who require additional support. Your experience culminates with an internship experience through which you can practically apply everything you have learned.

As all Mount education programs are approved by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE), successful completion of all program requirements leads to certification to teach in Maryland and states with reciprocity agreements with the MSDE. Students are advised, however, to consult the certificate requirements of states in which they may have interest teaching early in their study. The program holds a Certificate of Distinction from the International Reading Association for the quality preparation in reading instruction. Teacher education programs are accredited through the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
