Advanced Study in Reading Certificate

Post-Master's program for working teachers.

With a graduate certificate in advanced study in reading from the Mount, you will be prepared to lead your school’s literacy initiatives. A combination of nationally recognized coursework, on-site teaching experience and research will provide you with the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of diverse learners.

Advance your career as a reading specialist or literacy coach.

Graduates of the program are eligible for certification as a reading specialist, K-12, from the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE). The Mount's program includes:

  • Emphasis on planning for culturally and linguistically diverse students.
  • Eight courses and a practicum (30 credits total) that can be completed on a part-time basis.
  • Classes designed for working adults. Attend year-round evening classes at campuses in Frederick and Emmitsburg. Some classes may also be available online or in hybrid format to reduce travel time.
  • National recognition by the International Literacy Association.
  • Accredited by National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).

Affordability

$16,010 - Estimated total cost of program tuition, including fees*.

    • Cost is based on 30 credits (8 classes and one 6 credit practicum) at $530 per credit, plus practicum fee ($110)*.
    • No application fee. (1st time)
    • Financial assistance may be available through federal and state-funded programs, private loan providers, employer tuition remission or reimbursement, or deferment of undergraduate loans.

Admissions requirements

The graduate certificate in advanced study in reading is for certified teachers who hold a master's degree. Candidates are seeking the professional role of reading specialist/literacy coach in grades K-12. Admissions requirements include:

    • Master's degree in education with a minimum 2.75 GPA.
    • Current valid teaching certification.
    • Prerequisite courses may be required.
