Data Science

Data Science

A data scientist extracts meaning from data, leveraging statistics, computer science, machine learning and data engineering skills. That meaning can be used to predict new outcomes and uncover patterns that may not previously have been identified within the data. Data scientists have responsibility for outcome predictions as well as the data engineering steps, and often the data storage infrastructure.

About the Minor

The data science minor focuses on teaching critical thinking skills within specific tools and skillsets while challenging you to develop the ability to continually ask “why.” While in the minor, you'll develop critical skills for success, including the ability to learn independently, communicate results in written and verbal form, and make inferences in new situations.

The Mount’s data science minor can be a great complement to many majors. Pair the minor with a computer science degree and become a database administrator for a technology company, a forensic accounting major and reconstruct financial records for banking institutions, or a mathematics degree and become an information scientist for a government or research organization.
