Director of the Center for Service & Justice Francis Lukban will speak about the Rother Immersion service trips that will take place in New Jersey, West Virginia and Montana over this coming Spring Break. We will review student experiences from previous years' Rother Immersions, discuss key concepts of service and justice (including do's and don'ts), present how you and our community partners may each benefit from immersive service, and consider how service learning crucially integrates into the academic experience! This session is TODAY, in Library Classroom 102!

Please nominate a deserving member of the Class of 2027 (a rising senior) to receive a full tuition scholarship for their senior year. Any faculty, student, staff, or administrator can nominate a rising senior for the Thomas Merton Award. Students from the class of 2027 cannot nominate themselves, but may ask someone from the Mount community to complete a nomination form on their behalf. All nominations are due by February 27, 2026.
The award will be given to one student who has demonstrated exceptional community service to the Mount and strives to live out our mission: “As a Catholic university, Mount St. Mary’s graduates’ ethical leaders who are inspired by a passion for learning and lead lives of significance in service to God and others.” Although service is the principal characteristic, academic performance and financial need will also be considered. Please email questions to financialaid@msmary.edu.
The Thomas Merton Award was established by Mrs. Janice O’Malley and her late husband, Peter F. O’Malley, Jr. in loving memory of Peter’s parents for the care, affection, leadership, and service they generously gave to family, friends, and the community.
The Center for Service & Justice has partnered with The Carrier Pigeon Post to bring student articles and stories to incarcerated populations across multiple prison systems, including those of the State of Florida and the United Kingdom. Writing sessions will be held in McGowan 116 every Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
What is The Carrier Pigeon Post? The Carrier Pigeon Post is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to restore hope to incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals through stories and education. Each month, The Carrier Pigeon Post publishes and distributes, free of charge, a 4-color, 8-page, hope-filled, newsprint paper. They do so because they believe in the possibilities afforded by narrative-inspired imagination. The Carrier Pigeon Post encourages cultural competency and teaches cultural literacy. The paper features short, 300-500 word stories, written at a 6th-grade level, specifically crafted and curated for those who have been incarcerated. The articles feature narratives, paintings, sculpture, photography, landmarks, political figures, celebrities, literature, historical events and documents, monuments, multicultural folktales, finance and science.
If you have any questions, or wish to submit a piece to The Carrier Pigeon Post, please email cfs@msmary.edu.
The Writing Center (Phillips Library 106, near Room 102) is open for the semester. This free resource supports all Mount students with understanding assignment prompts, generating research questions, brainstorming/outlining, and citation. Schedule through Calendly, via Canvas → Resources, through MyMount—or just drop in. Make sure to bring your assignment prompt and any other needed info. We look forward to working with you!
We're putting the final touches on this semester's on-air schedule. But, we would like to have a few more participants. You could do a weekly one-or-two hour music or talk show. WMTB has listeners worldwide on the Internet (msmary.edu/wmtb)! Students should contact Robert Plum, and staff should contact Randy Gray.
