Art – Certification in Education (P-12)

Love and Teach Art

Art and design are everywhere. From websites and products to portraits and sculptures, creating and designing can help transform our world. In the art – certification in education (P-12) program, students learn to educate future artists who will shape the design innovations of tomorrow – because even Steve Jobs took a class on calligraphy and changed computing as we know it.

School of Education

The art – certification in education (P-12) is part of the Division of Education. Rigorous programs and close interaction with acclaimed faculty ensure that graduates leave the Mount ready to make a difference in a rapidly changing educational environment.

About the major and certification.

In the art – certification in education (P-12) program, you’ll major in fine arts with a concentration in art. In addition, you’ll also gain knowledge and practical classroom experience on the education side, learning about teaching competencies, educational policies, learning theory and human development, and how to evaluate student artistic abilities.

You’ll help students form the basis to become web or app designers, photographers, architects, painters, graphic or product designers, or take on other creative endeavors, as they seek to create culture, solve design problems and improve the lives of others.

The program culminates with an internship, professional seminar and capstone studio project, enabling you to practice the skills and tools you’ve developed in real-world situations. After certification, you’ll be able to teach to students from pre-K through 12th grade. This can enable you to address general topics to younger students, or focus on more specific skills such as painting, photography and sculpture to students in secondary education.

Students who seek certification in art (P-12), major in fine arts with a concentration in art. They also take specific core and education courses with field experiences at the elementary and secondary levels.

An advisor in the School of Education will be assigned upon the student’s admission to a teacher education program, though the primary advisor resides in the department of visual and performing arts. The student is responsible for knowing and meeting the requirements and deadlines for internship, program completion and certification, as well as all graduation requirements of the major department and of the university. Students are advised, however, to consult certification requirements in states of interest early in their study.
